Georganna Lenssen – Painting ’til the Very End

Today we are proud to share a video of one of our Zatista artists, Georganna Lenssen. Herein, Lenssen, a Pensylvania Academy of the Fine Arts graduate, exhibits her lush abstractions and painterly realist canvases at Philadelphia’s Rosenfeld Gallery. In the video, she details her working methods with oil paint, her pattern of “creative destruction”, and the inspiration she gains from the animal kingdom.

Regarding animals as subject matter, I am very passionate about nature and especially animals. I was born in Korea and have been exposed to Asian art all my life. I have always been impressed with its reverence for nature and by the vitality of its direct, spontaneous use of brush and ink. I try to incorporate these qualities in my work and focus upon gesture and movement as they express the essence and vitality of the subject.

Regarding artistic process, my paintings often develop into something I would never have expected at the start. Something unconscious charts the process and the piece moves into unplanned, surprising directions. That’s the part which really engages me. I feel painting should be an interactive process between painter and painting. With painting one has the opportunity to go inside oneself. One can uncover his or her unconscious or non-verbal intelligence, so to speak, and his or her unconscious sensibilities. Painting is an extremely engaging, interactive and exciting process for me.
