Artist Statement: A funny thing happened on the way to aleatoria... Somewhere between representation and abstraction, J. Coleman Miller finds a unique brand of surrealist expressionism. The mysterious images, composed with nothing but a digital camera and moving water, evoke wonder and delight without allowing us to fall victim to our usual inner censor who squelches the child in us and casts judgement based on what is known. Miller's art invites us to see what we don’t yet believe exists.
Fascinated by the great artists of the early 20th century- especially those who used chance in the commission of their works- fine art photographer J. Coleman Miller has created a new twist on aleatoric composition. When Miller photographs the swirling colors of Koi and the reflections that dance on the rippling surface of a clear pond, magical images come to life in a new form of surrealist expressionism. The works convey a deep sense of emotional connection, touching viewers with engaging, dreamlike images and unearthing darker, ghostly scenes as though from a childhood dream.

For this project, most of the limited edition photographs, 100 images in all, are beautifully presented as large metallic inkjet prints, face mounted to heavy plexi with polished edges and mounted on brushed aluminum dibond with aluminum standoff. Some the more painterly works are giclee printed on gallery wrapped canvas. All works are signed and numbered by the artist in limited editions of 25, and each number is a little different. Prints look best in larger sizes, bringing out the detail. Any size can be ordered as long as the proportions are kept the same. There are prints to match any color scheme, or have the image you like colorized to match your decor.
