Artist Statement:
By way of background, I am a Graphic Designer and Creative Director who has worked for many household names in agencies and in in-house studios for nearly 40 years.
Whilst I've always had to use drawing skills, it's only fairly recently that I have the opportunity to spend more time painting. I like to make my pictures look 'finished' but not too photo-realistic, and for each one (whenever possible) to tell a story rather than simply show a scene. I also like to use dry brushing in certain places to add a more sketchy quality - the original canvasses have very few ridges or bumps as I don't use thick layers of paint or broad brush strokes. As well as new one off canvases I am also currently working on a series called 'Fred and Joan'. These paintings tell the story of an elderly couple's retirement to the coast, and how they spend their days reminiscing and enjoying the seaside.
I recently appeared as a shortlisted artist on Sky Arts 'Landscape Artist of the Year' 2019, painting Smeaton's Tower in Plymouth. Although this time I did not progress beyond the heats it was a great experience and one that I'll try to repeat next year.
I live in Rutland with my wife Rachel, our two boys and our dog Molly. I look forward to building a collection of seascapes and other works over the coming months and years. I am happy to accept commissions through this website - please contact Zatista for more information.

Artistic Influences:
I am inspired by natural beauty and enjoy stormy weather as much as I like the sun. I find it remarkable how much a landscape can change depending on the season, the weather and the time of day. I try to incorporate many different moods into my works and vary the subject matter and the 'atmosphere' that I'm trying to create. Although I don't follow or try to emulate a particular artist or style, I like the looseness and observational skill of the Impressionists.
