Judy Jacobs

For me, painting is a dance where you hear the music in your head, then pour it onto a surface, using a mix of brush strokes, lines, colors and composition. The dance continues (often for days), as the rhythms change from fast to slow; hard to soft; loud to quiet and peaceful.

Recently I've been painting in a naive, simple style. These pieces are colorful and minimal in design. After a several-year sabbatical from making new art, this new work gives me joy and a sense of peace, basking in the simplicity and straightforwardness of the designs. I call my new paintings "simple, honest art."

I still work in a variety of themes and styles because sometimes I need to get lost in the turbulent waves of the sea or bask in the gentle beauty of a simple flower in a vase. Other times I use gestural marks and organic forms to parlay emotions onto the paper or canvas, using color and form to express fears, doubts, love and/or desire.

Many of my paintings create a sense of energy and movement, while maintaining a balance within the design. The creation process intrigues me, and it's not uncommon for me to work on 4-5 pieces at a time, enjoying the transformation of each artwork during its creation.
