| Artist Statement: | When I'm not in my Marin County studio, I'm wandering city streets taking photos. Photos are the foundation of my work. In recent years, I've been inspired by images in Taiwan, Mexico, Spain, Berlin, Holland among other places but maybe some of my favorite images, and maybe the ones I've become best known for, are the scenes I've discovered right here in the San Francisco Bay Area where I live. Drawing on my experience in fine art, photojournalism, and graphic design, I capture the gritty soul of a cityscape with my camera. It might be a blinking neon sign or a weathered building, a tangle of overhead wires, a high heel or a discarded bicycle. I photograph not only for the subject matter, though. With my pictures I am documenting details that tell a story. In the studio, I take these original images and play with them, adding acrylic paint in several layers, overlaying and sometimes even stripping away the image I originally started with. When these elements are combined the result is a one-of-a-kind mixed media piece with a distinctively edgy urban look. Part archivist, part storyteller, part visual junkie, my work layers original photos with acrylic paint in a way that injects elements of fantasy. This messaging creates a powerful visual narrative, where the present is often confronted by the past. Photos of a decayed vintage motel sign layered with graffiti, for example, portray the relevancy of street art while evoking a sense of nostalgia for the design of the past. To create this signature edgy look, I embrace flaws, even emphasize them, with techniques that make sporadic imperfections an integral part of the final piece. I love the idea of deconstructing something and putting it back together skewed and slightly off register; a visual reminder there is beauty in imperfection. This purposefully distressed look, powerful photos and bold color, are the key elements of this unorthodox style - an aesthetic that goes beyond representational art, resists categorization, and epitomizes modern originality and innovation. |
