Art 101
Neoclassical style of art aimed to revitalize and emulate the classic themes and elegant styles of ancient Greece and Rome. Neoclassical art often incorporated a moral story (a message) with social order, logical, and rational behavior into the work.
Neoclassic artists sought to instill in an individual the ability to rediscover the human intellect, true morality, and a virtuous way of living. Neoclassicism emphasizes courage, sacrifice, nationalism, and tradition and is filled with sharp and vibrant colors. The contrast between light and dark (also known as chiaroscuro) coupled with vibrant colors shows balance and clarity. Linear design, stillness, and calmness are important elements that are expressed through neoclassical art.
