Art 101
Classical art is art inspired and influenced by the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. In classical art, the Greeks and Romans emphasized perfection of the shape and precision of the human figure, and would often pay respect to bravery and courage of their enemies. The study of light, shadow, and human anatomy was especially seen through the classical paintings and sculptures. The Romans especially depicted "real" poses where every detail of the human body was portrayed in their sculptures—from wrinkles to warts.
Classical Greek art shows the optimistic beliefs the Greeks had about humanism, morality, and social virtue. There was a great pagan influence in classical art with the Greek’s beliefs in the world of the Gods and Goddesses. This influence portrayed relaxed figures with a realistic sense of space and depth, or a linear perspective that mastered the depiction of 3-dimensional space. The classical period also showed a strong desire to depict the beauty of nature, portraits, and still-life. Famous Classic Artists:
