About This Work

“Mashrabiya” is composed of paper from a book that is over 100 years old.The book is for children and titled, “Chit Chat”, published in Boston in 1897 by Lothrop Publishing Company. Two individual book pages are used for this artwork. The word, “CHIT” can be observed on the top page. I consider the paper to be an ephemeral object and treat it with delicacy and intimacy.Having been previously printed as text sheets, each leaf is processed again by an inkjet printer. The images I use are from one of NASA’s sites dedicated to the photographs captured by the Hubble telescope. You can observe remnants of this in the blue color that peeks out from beneath the gold leaf embellishment. This is revealed through the burnishing process during the application of the gold leaf. After the Hubble image was printed on one side, an Islamic pattern is selected to print on the reverse.Aspects of the pattern are cut completely through the paper by hand with an X-Acto knife using a “Z” blade for precision.Additional information was pierced into the surface with a pinpoint, executed in a ritualistic manner.Gold leaf adhesive was brushed on to create a sticky film in order to bond leaf to paper.Rubbing the leaf with an agate tool establishes the desired variable appearance. The bottom layer is composed of an inkjet printed book page treated with graphite powder, applied after spraying with a clear acrylic. The graphite readily attaches to the wet, tacky material.Polishing the graphite with a soft cloth produces a rich, opulent appearance.
