| Artist Statement: | Art has always been an evolving process for me. I was born into a family that was surrounded with art, music, social activism, and politics. Our home was more of an informal art museum than a comfortable house. Eventually, I left that small Ohio town for college in Chicago, which radically expanded my exposure to art. At that time, Chicago had become the mecca for the Bauhaus doctrine of form follows function and it permeated our design classes. Likewise, the abstract expressionists in New York brought about the importance of raw emotion and gave power to the more composed Bauhaus tenets. The natural and organic forms of that period surfaced in my sculpture and painting. Discovering the force of movement and color in primitive art and in the abstract expressionists pushed my painting and eventually my ceramics far beyond the concept of form follows function. Nature as raw, powerful and primitive are significant feelings that I like to portray. |
