| Artist Statement: | In my work, I use three consistent techniques. First, is the physical act of tearing apart and rebuilding a canvas. This process adds a textural composition to the finished piece and lends itself to creating “windows” of writing within the piece. The sewing influence dates back to childhood memories of sitting on my mother’s lap as she created her own fabric masterpieces. The next layer involved in my work is illustration. I often compliment soft blocks of color, which blend and bleed into each other with detail of one organic image or subject. In addition to the focal image, I add sketches with charcoal or pencil to communicate my story or theme. Each single piece holds a symbolic link to the other, in an attempt to navigate the delicate and complex nature behind the human soul. The third aspect of my work is the written word. I adopted Leonardo DaVinci’s “mirror-writing” style of note keeping in my journals to protect personal thoughts from my eight sisters and brothers when I was young. Now, I almost always include this reverse writing somewhere within my art. It is mostly there as a visual and compositional element, however the words do reveal a deeper understanding to the initial inspiration. I use excerpts from my own journal, notes that I gathered for the piece, or significant poetry or lyrics. Another reason for presenting the words in reverse is to prevent them from becoming a distraction to the overall image. I intend for them add another layer and dimension without entirely stealing the show. |
