| Artist Statement: | Life in rural SE Pennsylvania in the 60's and 70's with 7 siblings, 12 dogs, 4 cats, 5 horses, and some chickens and goats in the mix was good foundation for the life Leah leads as an artist today. Painting and drawing as a means of expression were always on the peripheral never really front and center till much later in her life. A graduate of Syracuse University with a BA, the basic skills were acquired, but the actual understanding of process and the making of art came years later with her studies at the famed Art Students League of New York. Nothing can replace the years spent traveling the world as a talent scout, the different cultures, people, food and images make her the artist she is today. She takes the colors from her life experiences and channels them into the medium. She is inspired by many artists some of her favorites are Diebenkorn, DeKooning, and Matisse. Leah's work has been exhibited in numerous places including, Flores Fine Art and Gallery 100 Saratoga Springs, NY. She has had solo- exhibitions at the Mimosa Gallery Saratoga Springs, NY, and Crimson Gallery Saratoga Springs, NY. Participated in group shows with many local venues. In 2009 she had a a solo show in the small gallery of the Valley Artisans in Cambridge NY., and in 2010 and 2011 was featured in two 2 person shows at the Riverfront Studios in Schuylerville, NY. Her work is in numerous private collections and public venues including Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, NY. Leah says of her work: "I like to paint the familiar so painting animals and pets like fish, dogs, cats, and chickens, comes naturally to me. After living with them my entire life their shapes and movements make them much more then pets, I am so familiar with them that the paintings become more about the exercise than the object. I am always fascinated by the way an individual line or gesture of a shape will always tell the story, the rest can be pure creativity." Today Leah splits her time between her work in NYC as Exhibition Outreach Program Director at the Art Students League of New York and her studio/home in Salem, NY. |
