As an artist, I am inspired by the way things look in the world around me and on my canvas. I want my artwork first to engage the eye and then the mind. Drawing is an essential element of my work. It is my hope that if a painting is beautiful it will lead the viewer to further contemplation.
My paintings are grounded in the tradition of realism but with a contemporary investigation into surface and pictorial space. The compositions I chose invite viewers to consider metaphorical and psychological interpretations for ordinary things. My images require viewers to finish the story in the painting for themselves. The objects become symbolic containers for the viewer’s own thoughts and feelings. Passages of abstract marks need the mind to complete the details. My artwork is guided by my experiences, emotions and vision. I also look to nature, art history and contemporary painting practice for ideas and inspiration. Creating images that resonate with my viewers is my intention.
