| Artist Statement: | Gordon has pursued photography as a avocation for most of his life – while busy working as a disc-jockey… radio interviewer… TV producer-director… scriptwriter and, most recently – as a college instructor. Recent retirement from the faculty at Ithaca College has provided the time to work more seriously in photography and to apply all he's learned as a professional communicator. Gordon feels that all forms of communication can be boiled down to, basically, “telling a story.” A photographer uses the creative elements of light/shadow, composition, depth, and often color to produce an image that may convey more about a subject than what was contained in the original scene. Then, modern technology allows fine-tuning of raw images digitally – with similar techniques that have been used in the darkroom for more than a century. And, while inexpensive “point-and-shoot” cameras have made taking a good snapshot almost effortless -- producing a fine, creative photograph involves selecting a worthy subject, then placing the camera in the correct location and choosing the right lens to capture the image at just the right moment. Moving to the southeastern North Carolina coast from upstate New York has provided a whole new world of beautiful subjects to photograph. He lives in Wilmington with his wife Cathy, and they enjoy discovering gorgeous, new coastal vistas every day. |
