| Artist Statement: | I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the California College of Arts. The visual influence of four years of expatriate living in China, Japan and India continues to appear in my most recent abstract paintings. Many of my paintings contain Asian color influences and Asian language calligraphic writing elements-- abstracted. Abstract or illegible writing is called Asemic writing. I consistently create a complex ground in an accumulation of elements on canvas, panel or paper. A painting may begin overloaded with acrylic image transfers from found images, often lens based, that I’ve collected over month and years. The images I choose to use in a painting I select intuitively and reproduce with my scanner or digital camera, print and apply to the canvas face down with a adhesive of transparent acrylic medium. When dry, I remove the paper backing, leaving the ink of the image embedded into the now dry transparent acrylic medium. This is how I build the underpainting to a visual complexity which I then simpllfy with over-layers--with both transparent and semi-opaque paints and color glazes. I work in water based acrylic and Flashe, as well as in oil and alkyd paints. As I apply paint runs and pours, the earlier underlying esthetic is demolished by painting out, covering over partially and adding up to a simplification, in a complex visual texture and depth. I enjoy working to find solutions to problems that my initial layers initiate. |
