| Artist Statement: | I grew up in Metairie, Louisiana (a suburb of New Orleans). I used to run around in the street barefoot and do cartwheels down the levee. Art was my favorite thing to do in school, although we only did it occasionally. Also acting. Although I never thought of acting or art as career choices. Probably because they were too fun. In high school, I somehow got incredibly interested in math, which led me to attend M.I.T. in Cambridge, Mass. While at M.I.T., I became a successful pole vaulter on the Women's Track Team and graduated with a Bachelor's and Master's in Computer Science in four years. After college, I worked at a dot-com while continuing pole vault training. I worked for about year before I realized that I could quit and choose my own destiny. I started doing contract work which allowed me to train more seriously. After a both enjoyable and disappointing athletic journey, I moved to Los Angeles, where I've reconnected with the arts. I paint, make films, and practice Ashtanga yoga. My work is influenced by my spiritual practice and interest in the work of many spiritual teachers. I like creating art that is accessible, that evokes a visceral response. Despite my technical background, I prefer art that hits the gut rather than the brain, that has imperfection, which makes it more real and in the moment, that doesn't follow a pattern. As my work evolves, I hope it becomes more and more transparent, so that my expression of my unique experience of the world resonates with the viewer. |
