| Artist Statement: | In the series Stems, Leaves I undertook the exercise of trying to see a common object (a cut flower) as simply a collection of parts which could be rearranged to create a new object. I am very interested in seeing significance in details often overlooked. Rather than recognizing only "a flower", which itself inherently displays its own measure of beauty, I chose to break it down into its basic elements. Realizing the importance of each individual leaf and stem, I created compositions out of these pieces of organic matter which illustrate the potential which exists within us to look for, and find beauty and inspiration everywhere. My recent work involves photographing corners and other mundane architectural spaces and portraying them as mysterious, confusing and unidentifiable places to be explored - or avoided. Walls, doors, and windows appear as stark spaces with minimal identifiable details. However, what is shown seems foreign and familiar all at once. In this work I am not only outwardly investigating the space around me, but also the limits of that space, such as walls and corners. The ambiguity in the imagery is referencing the ambiguity of the boundaries. Boundaries are never concrete, limits can be exceeded, especially if they are self imposed. There is always something beyond to be encountered. |
