North Sea I
Painting, Oil on Canvas,
A seascape in oil on canvas, this painting is a study of the effects of nature.
The North Sea off the Frisian coast can be cold and unforgiving sometimes, but it also has a feeling about it, a kind of magic, born of tales of sailors long forgotten and the romance of maritime history. When it is both violent and soft, it is at its most beautiful.
My work is influenced to some extent by the great artists James McNeill Whistler and Gustave Courbet, among others.
It is realist but spontaneous, and free, so as to capture the mood and atmosphere before the light becomes too dominant, or the interval before the relative strength or weakness of one or more of the elements reduces the moment.
The painting is unframed. I wish I didn't have to sell this painting (I never want to sell the paintings I like) but I am an artist and artists must sell their paintings to buy more oil and canvas, and continue painting... continue the quest for nature's mood and nature's great moments - the interplay of elements and light.
