Painting, Oil on Canvas,
A seascape in oil on canvas, this painting is a study of the effects of nature.
The scene is from the beach near Brodau, on the Ostholstein coast in Northern Germany. The Baltic Sea has a special quality on days like these, when it is soft and gentle, muted, almost surreal.
The air is laden with moisture, thick and heavy and making it seem difficult to breathe, but somehow one wants to embrace it, inhale great lungfuls of its softness. It will be some time before the light can dominate, and the quiet tranquility of these morning hours is special.
My work is influenced to some extent by the great artists James McNeill Whistler and Gustave Courbet, among others.
It is realist but spontaneous, and free, so as to capture the mood and atmosphere before the light becomes too dominant, or the interval before the relative strength or weakness of one or more of the elements reduces the moment.
The painting is unframed. I wish I didn't have to sell this painting (I never want to sell the paintings I like) but I am an artist and artists must sell their paintings to buy more oil and canvas, and continue painting... continue the quest for nature's mood and nature's great moments - the interplay of elements and light.
