This painting means many things at once to me. I used a fellow artist as a model, but when I was painting it I was thinking a lot about my uncle, and it ended up looking just like him. He had been an assistant director in Hollywood for years, and was really struggling with depression at the time. More than anything though, this is a portrait of myself. I painted it at a time when I felt really powerless in my life, and unable to access the strength that I knew was within me. "The Director" is a portrait of a man who has all of the necessary props and resources at his fingertips, but fails to put the scene into action. It's a painting about potential, and the ways we hold ourselves back. |
