This is a Pietà that I completed during 2005. I was affected by the war that ensued after 9-11 in Iraq and Afghanistan, and traumatically began to envision people without faces. The trauma and brutality of war made it impossible for me to envision the Virgin's face, so I painted her with her head blown open, as if by a bombshell. Inside her head there is a cross constructed of Hebrew letters. This syncretic idea of Hebrew within Catholicism is in part due to my Jewish Heritage as a practicing Catholic. To the right, there is a tomb-like form, with the Roman numerals MCXMVII across the bottom. This series of numerals are the same that you will find inscribed on Raphael's tomb in the Pantheon. |
