Maria Gabriela Brito is an interior designer and authority on why, where, and how to display contemporary art in any environment. Frequent contributer to Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP lifestyle newsletter, Maria knows the art world inside and out and is able to create the perfect environment to showcase a well curated art collection. An art collector herself, Maria’s mission is to help her clients live beautifully and get dialed in to the art scene worldwide. She is also an avid believer in encouraging kids to grow up around great works of art. Contributing writer Nancy Cost interviews this month’s Guest Curator, Maria Gabriela Brito.

When did you become familiar with the world of fine art?
Since I had memories! My parents were art collectors and my grandfather was an M.D. who, in his spare time, painted gorgeous oil-on-canvas landscapes.

Do you see any differences between the way Americans and South Americans incorporate art into their lives or interiors?
Not really. Perhaps some Americans are more exposed and can push the envelope a bit more.

What is your advice on how to start an art collection?
Do preliminary research and buy the absolute best that you can within your price range. Go to art fairs and galleries and buy what you love, BUT, always do preliminary research about the artist.

Lifestyling by Maria Gabriela Brito

Does good art have to cost lots and lots of money?
Not really. I’m always after the thrill of discovering emerging artists whose pieces are way more affordable than mid-career or established artists.

What was your most recent art purchase?
An Assume Vivid Astro Focus Print and a Sculpture that they made out of one of the original Dade County voting booths from the debacle of the 2000 Presidential elections.

What is the biggest misconception you find people making regarding art in their homes?
That they can’t have contemporary art because it’s either too edgy, too expensive, or too hard to understand.

Where are your favorite places to go get inspired by art?
Anywhere! From chic hotels to galleries to collectors’ homes.

What’s your number one tip for making an interior sizzle?
COLOR!

What was the first piece of art you bought?
A Rothko print at The MoMA 13 years ago.

Lifestyling by Maria Gabriela Brito

Have you ever purchased artwork on line?
Yes, from different sites around the world.

What’s hanging on your walls at home?
Vik Muniz, Mickalene Thomas, Assume Vivid Astro Focus, Flavia Da Rin, Faile, Mark Bradford.

What would our readers be surprised to know about you?
I love pop music from the 80s!

Famous German abstract painter and one of the leading figures of the art world, Gerhard Richter, turned 80 years old earlier this year. If you’ve been to a museum lately, you’ve probably seen one of his signature colorful smeared canvases as many museums seem to have a Richter on display. If he’s not yet a common name in your household, now’s the time to get to know Gerhard Richter. Even an armchair viewing of his current solo exhibition via the Internet will help you do just that.

Elizabeth I, 1966 by Gerhard Richter image: Tate.org

Organized by the Tate Modern in London, the exhibition (next on display in Paris this summer) spans almost five decades and is a major retrospective that groups together significant points in the timeline of his impressive career.

Abstract Painting, 1990 by Gerhard Richter image: Tate.org

The Tate describes Richter as, “…known for the diversity of his approaches to painting. His practice can seem to be structured by various oppositions, with paintings after photographs countering abstract pictures; traditional still-lifes alongside highly charged subjects; monochrome grey works and multicoloured grids. Some paintings are planned out and ordered; others are the result of unpredictable accumulations of marks and erasures. Even a single painting can seem contradictory, with some areas seeming gestural, and other parts almost mechanic.”

Abstract Painting (726) , 1990 by Gerhard Richter image: Tate.org

“The title of this exhibition, Gerhard Richter: Panorama, evokes the intention to look around at the range of Richter’s practice, discovering contradictions and connections, continuities and breaks. Each room is devoted to a particular moment of his career. While the focus is on painting, the exhibition also features glass constructions, mirrors, drawings and photographs.”

In addition to solo exhibitions in Paris, Beirut, Ecuador and Berlin this year, Richter ‘s work will be featured in group exhibitions in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, the UK, Hong Kong, New Orleans, Minneapolis, New York, Chicago, and Maine.

Get your bidder numbers and paddles ready because it’s happening again – an extremely popular original work of art will be up for sale at Sotheby’s in New York on May 2nd. Apparently, this 1895 version of Edvard Munch’s celebrated painting “The Scream”, which has been merchandised up the wazoo on mouse pads, hats, t-shirts, tote bags, inflatable dolls, and plush toys, is expected to sell for more than $80 million.

Scream Plush Doll by Unemployed Philosophers Guild on Amazon.com

According to Arts Beat at the New York Times, “Munch made four versions of the composition, which has become the embodiment of angst and existential dread. Three are in Norwegian museums and this one, pastel on board, from 1895, is the only “Scream” still in private hands. It is being sold by Petter Olsen, a Norwegian businessman and shipping heir whose father, Thomas, was a friend, neighbor and patron of the artist.”

Homer, The Scream Covers & Citations http://search.it.online.fr/

Arts Beat continues, “Besides being one of the most recognizable images in art history, “The Scream’’ is also one of the most often stolen. Versions of it have been taken twice, first in 1994, when two thieves entered the National Gallery of Norway and fled with an 1893 “Scream” (it was recovered unharmed later that year), and then in 2004, when masked gunmen stole the 1910 version as well as Munch’s “Madonna” from the Munch Museum, also in Oslo (both works were recovered two years later).”

Ghostface from the Scream movie series created by Wes Craven. Based on The Scream painting by Edvard Munch, the mask was originally created by Fun World employee as a Halloween costume prior to being discovered by Wes Craven for the Scream film.

Simon Shaw, who heads Sotheby’s Impressionist and modern art department in New York, said in an interview with Arts Beat, “The Scream is unique. Everybody knows it, but paradoxically few people have ever really seen it in person. When you stand in front of the painting it’s really quite scary. It has the power to shock.’’

"The Scream" inflatable doll

Indeed, that kind of price tag often shocks me. How about you? More importantly, tell us the truth – have you ever purchased a t-shirt, poster, or coffee mug, etc., depicting Munch’s “The Scream”?

As you may know, today is Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season beginning tomorrow, Ash Wednesday.

A float design from the 1886 Krewe of Proteus parade by Carlotta Bonnecaze, from the Tulane Carnival Collection.

What you may not know is that, “Tulane [University] has the finest collection of Mardi Gras art in the city,” Carnival historian and float designer, Henri Schindler tells The Times-Picayune.

“Not only does the Louisiana Research Collection at Tulane have the broadest assortment of vintage Mardi Gras ball invitations, dance cards and other ephemera in the world, but the library is sharing its wealth with students and scholars through a new, searchable online digital library, ” reports The Times-Picayune.

Whether or not you have a sweetheart, you always need to have a good movie option up your sleeve for Valentine’s Day. I’m not talking about blockbusters – indie/art films are more my speed. Thinking back to an earlier WallSpin post 10 Ways to Make a New St(ART) – film is art too. So consider this one way of bringing art into your life in 2012. I can think of some other ways to bring art into your life as well, if you need some pointers (wink wink!).

Robert Altman – Director by Matt Dinerstein on Zatista.com

Meanwhile, here’s a list of Leonard Maltin’s Five Best Indie Movie’s To See This Month, via Huffington Post. Check out more of Maltin’s movie musings on www.leonardmaltin.com.

1. Albert Nobbs

Glenn Close first played the role of a woman masquerading as a male butler in Victorian-era Dublin off-Broadway in 1982. It’s taken this long for her to bring this fascinating story to film, and the result has earned her and her gifted costar Janet McTeer well-deserved Oscar nominations.

2. Coriolanus

Ralph Fiennes has chosen one of Shakespeare’s most challenging plays for his directorial debut and done it proud, as both filmmaker and star. Shakespeare’s words flow from his lips with the greatest of ease, and he’s completely credible as a ferocious warrior who finds himself a pariah on his own home turf of Rome.

3. Declaration of War

Valérie Donzelli dares to dramatize her own experiences: falling in love, having a baby, then dealing with the heartbreak of learning that their boy is desperately ill. As director, costar and co-writer (with real-life mate Jérémie Elkaïm) she avoids melodrama, cliché, and easy answers – just as she and her family apparently did in real life. In its own quiet way this film is really quite remarkable.

4. Project Nim

Oscar-winning documentarian James Marsh (Man on Wire) explores a fascinating case study about a chimpanzee who was taken from the wild and placed in a world of humans to see if he can learn to communicate. The animal’s fate, as he is passed from one caring person to another, is fodder for great storytelling – if not a terribly happy tale.

5. On the Bowery

In the late 1950s, novice filmmaker Lionel Rogosin spent months getting to know the denizens of Manhattan’s skid row, The Bowery, so that he could bring cameras there and capture the lives of these men. The result predates both cinema vérité and reality television; its unusual melding of documentary techniques and staged scenes manages to convey the truth of its setting and its sad protagonists. It’s one-of-a-kind, and deserving of rediscovery.

What you’re looking at is Andreas Gursky’s photo, “Rhein II”, which sold for $4,338,500 at Christie’s in November of last year, breaking the record for the most expensive photograph ever sold at auction. Yes, you read that right. Four million dollars. The buyer was anonymous.

Barry, Baker, Brookline, MA by Joel Degrand on zatista.com

According to NPR’s Claire O’Neill, “The photo comes at the mammoth proportion of about 6-by-11 feet, and that’s got to count for something. Plus (sorry all starving photographers), that price tag is nothing unusual for Gursky. Until the purchase of Cindy Sherman‘s Untitled in May, Gursky’s 99 Cent II Diptychon had been the most expensive photo, which sold at Sotheby’s for $3.3 million in 2007. He has photos in major museums like the Museum of Modern Art and London’s Tate Modern and studied under the renowned Bernd and Hilla Becher in Germany.”

The good news is, we don’t sell $4 million photos here on Zatista. We sell affordable photographs, like the two above and this one:

And that’s barely the tip of the iceberg. So make yourself a pot of tea, grab your lap top, sit back in your easy chair, breathe a deep sigh of relief, and enjoy the bounty of budget-friendliness that we have to offer. It’s art that’s fit for folks with fabulous taste and a budget like you and me!

One thing I look forward to each January is the announcement of the Color of the Year selected by the Pantone Color Institute. Some may think having a Color of the Year is a silly concept, but I’m fascinated there is such a thing. OK, ready for it? Drum roll please…

Tangerine Tango!

According to Pantone, “Tangerine Tango, a spirited reddish orange, continues to provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward.” Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute® explains, “Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth.”

Eiseman continues, “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”

Pantone comments, “Over the past several years, orange has grown in popularity and acceptance among designers and consumers alike. A provocative attention-getter, Tangerine Tango is especially appealing in men’s and women’s fashion.”

“Tangerine Tango is a bit exotic, but in a very friendly, non-threatening way. Tangerine Tango is a complementary opposite that flatters blue or green eyes. When paired with brown, it brings out an amber cast,” says Pantone.

Pantone suggests, “Energize interior spaces with Tangerine Tango patterned home accessories. Pillows, bedspreads and tabletop accessories in this high-impact hue add spice to any room. Or incorporate Tangerine Tango appliances and personal electronics for an unexpected pop of color.”

Going a step further with interior design advice Pantone says: “Looking for an inexpensive way to perk up your home? Paint a wall in Tangerine Tango for a dynamic burst of energy in the kitchen, entryway or hallway.”

Today is the day; Gagosian Gallery walls burst with Hirst in New York, Beverly Hills, London, Paris, Rome, Geneva, Athens, and Hong Kong.

Beclometasona, 2008 by Damien Hirst gagosiangallery.com

The Complete Spot Paintings exhibit, opening at all Gagosian Galleries today, offers Hirst-o-files and jet setters alike The Complete Spot Painting Challenge where dedicated dot hunters can visit each of the eleven galleries and receive a signed spot print by British artist Damien Hirst.

The Complete Spot Challenge gagosiangallery.com

Spot seekers may supplement the hunt by referencing Gagosian Gallery’s free iPad app which provides an overview of exhibitions and projects at Gagosian Gallery and includes a Damien Hirst “art board” for exploring over ninety spot paintings.

A body of work spanning 25 years, Mr. Hirst’s spot paintings are controversial for a variety of reasons, one of which is, according to the New York Times, “Of the hundreds of spot canvases, Mr. Hirst painted only five himself”.

"Controlled Substance Key Painting," by the British artist Damien Hirst, dates from 1994, an earlier "spot painting" period.

Will this global exhibit be as “fantastically boring” as Richard Dorment, art critic for The Daily Telegraph in London, called the spot paintings? When asked about the premise of the Gagosian shows, he replied: “The accumulation of scores of them in one place like the Tate’s Turbine Hall could make a visual impact, but I can’t see the point of filling all of Gagosian’s galleries around the world. What purpose will it serve?”

After today, the world (aka the critics) will decide. Meanwhile, let’s go and see for ourselves!

photo: Goeril Saetre for The New York Times

I came across this house recently in The New York Times.

photo: Goeril Saetre for The New York Times

Not surprisingly, the carefully furnished (aka, sparse interior) caught my eye. I couldn’t help but wonder: is there any artwork on the walls?

photo: Goeril Saetre for The New York Times

With each photo, the notion became less and less likely. Granted, in a house that doesn’t have running water, I’m not entirely surprised.

photo: Goeril Saetre for The New York Times

Clearly, there is an intention of simplicity in this home. Yet for conversation’s sake, my question to you is: If this was your house, would you hang art? If not, so be it. But if so, what kind of art and where?

photo: Goeril Saetre for The New York Times

Or, is the view of the dense forest outside the windows framed by the clean lines of the house, art in itself?

photo: Goeril Saetre for The New York Times

I must admit, I’d love to spend a weekend away in a place like this. Would you?

As December comes to a close, we’d like to wrap up with a look at what got people talking on WallSpin this year. Here’s a round-up of our most popular posts from 2011:

from 'Upset in San Francisco' post on WallSpin – Artist Tom Otterness Photo: Gawker.com

Gawker dropped a bomb on legions of animal lovers in San Francisco earlier this month. New York based artist Tom Otterness, who was contracted by the city to create a series of statues for a local subway station, is known to have…

Barbara Perrino is an accomplished New York artist, versatile in many mediums. After spending years as a fine art photographer she turned to quilts. There’s no fuss, frill, or flower here. These are not your Grandma’s quilts…

The minimalism and elegance of traditional Japanese brush work and woodblock printing has made its way into the work of Western artists of the past and present…

from 'Is It Done Yet?' post on WallSpin – "Untitled" by Fernando Velez Castro on Zatista.com

When I watch my wife, who is a painter, or any of our artist friends work on a piece, I’m always intrigued by how they know the work is done…

from 'In the Studio' post on WallSpin – Frida Kahlo – nytimes.com

We live in a time of reality TV and tell-all books, and I think involving artists and non-artists in the creative process sparks that natural curiosity we all have about other people’s lives…

Have you heard of Scotland’s phantom sculptor?

Tree in the library photo: Chris Scott/flickr

As NPR reporter Robert Krulwich recently reported, “somebody has been dropping glorious little paper sculptures into libraries and museums all over Edinburgh, and we’ve just heard that there are now three more…[but] they will be the last.”

Egg in the library photo: Chris Scott/flickr

It all started last spring when a librarian at the Scottish Poetry Library in Edinburgh spotted a little tree in the library. It was intricately made of paper and was mounted on a book. Very curious. Utterly anonymous.

Coffin in the library photo: Chris Scott/flickr

Then came others: a gold-leafed eggshell broken in two with a note, “This is for you in support of libraries, books, words, ideas…” Then at The National Library of Scotland, a coffin topped by a large gramophone carved from a mystery novel by one of Britain’s bestselling crime writers. Next came a movie theatre, a dragon, a tea cup. Eventually, there would be ten beautifully made paper sculptures in all. Nobody claimed authorship.

Tea cup in the library photo: Chris Scott/flickr

A real mystery was afoot. After a few months and much sleuthing, The Edinburgh Evening News announced it had cracked the case. But instead of immediately identifying the perpetrator, the Evening News decided to take a poll: Did readers really want to know who made these gorgeous teacups and dragons and magnifying glasses, or would they rather let the artist remain anonymous? According to their readers, they did not want to know!

The phantom returns photo: Chris Scott/flickr

Then the sculptures started popping up again, this time with an explanatory note.

Explanatory note photo: Chris Scott/flickr

Since I never want to be the spoiler of a good mystery, feel free to spend a few minutes reading up on this creative whodunit (links below). You won’t be sorry. In fact, you may be inspired this holiday season to give the gift of original art! Trust us, art is the gift that does not disappoint.

There are, quite literally, hundreds of different events going on daily in Miami this weekend. There’s something for everyone during the Miami fair season.

Lanvin's Disco Tableau at The Rubell Family Collection photo: Huffington Post

And when your appetite for art is fully satisfied, head over to the Electric Pickle to check out the beachy club scene and kick back or find your groove via the sounds of Culpirt. If it turns out that music or a 24 hour party is a better fit for you, return to Miami in March for Winter Music Conference.

Jennifer Rubell in front of her installation "Incubation" at Rubel Family Collection photo: Huffington Post

With colorful and graphic screen prints happy enough to make even the biggest sourpuss jump for joy, Dallas-based husband and wife design team Jeff Barfoot and Shay Ometz, aka Bee Things, talk to Zatista’s contributing writer Nancy Cost about the best and worst parts of working together, and who gets the final say.

Note: Jeff is answering the questions and Shay’s chiming in on occasion.

Painted Bunting by Bee Things on Zatista

How do you like being a husband and wife design team?
We love it. Bee Things is not our day job – I’m a principal at RBMM, the design arm of advertising agency The Richards Group, and Shay is a Senior Art Director for fashion brand Fossil. Bee Things is our escape, our project that doesn’t have a deadline.

What’s the best part?
Just getting a chance to spend more time together. Our work and family commitments take up just most of our time and energy, so having this gives us a chance to talk and laugh and be affectionate instead of sitting and watching t.v. or burying our heads in our respective books.

The hardest part?
Keeping up with it. We have pretty demanding jobs, and two very demanding young kids. The other hard thing is if one of us is out of commission (sick, traveling, etc.), the whole operation shuts down so the other can take care of the kids. It’s hard, but so wonderful too; I can’t quite describe it.

Who gets the final say?
“Me!” says Shay, with a mouth full of ice cream. We concept and sketch everything together. I’m more the illustrator, so I usually take our sketch and execute it on the computer, get it about 90% there. Shay always knows how to add that last wonderful ten percent, that spark that makes it come alive. Every time I’ve ever put my foot down and argued, she’s been right. I remember two prints where I argued strongly at the very end. On one, I won, and it’s our worst-selling print of all time. On the other, Shay won, and it’s one of our best-sellers. But don’t tell her I told you that.

How long do you spend on a design before you start screening prints?
It depends. Sometimes they just come right out, and sometimes we have to drag them through the mud for a while before they behave themselves. Some prints we sketched, illustrated, and printed the same weekend. Other prints we have in the works for weeks, not quite right, before they finally talk to us. But when they’re done, we know instantly.

What is your studio like?
Our studio is an outbuilding in our back yard. It’s small, about 200 square feet, but wonderful and colorful and cozy. We print by hand, so the only electronics our there are a stereo (which pretty much plays either NPR or Red Sox baseball games via the iPhone), and an air conditioner. We also have a small fridge full of only two things: emulsion fluid for making screens, and cold beer.

How large can you make your prints?
Our largest size is 24” x 18”, but that’s really stretching our workspace to its limit. We’re at our best around 14” x 11” or 16” x 20”. Most of our prints are 10” x 14”, so people can buy off-the-shelf frames that are either 12” x 16” or 16” x 20” and have a nice, even border around them.

How did you first decide to make screen prints?
When Shay was pregnant with our first son, I filled a brown paper bag with snacks for her everyday. I would draw with crayons on the bag, always something different. Her friends and coworkers would see the bags and say, “You need to sell those!” But we didn’t give it much thought. At that same time, we bought a house with a little studio-shed-thing in the back yard. As we were talking about what to do with the rooms Shay said in an offhand way, “You should make the shed-thingy into a screen printing studio. I’ll bet you would like that.” And I said, “I wonder if you can screen print on lunch bags?” Neither of us had any experience screen printing, even in college. So, I bought a screen printing book and that was that – it all came together. I converted the little structure into a studio and we made our first print right away – with the wrong ink and everything – but we loved the medium.

Blue Jays by Bee Things on Zatista

How do you get inspired?
The best answer is: we’ve let our creativity become our lifestyle. Our dining room table has our computers and sketchbooks and jars of pencils and markers. We talk work all the time, whether we’re cooking dinner or out at the movies. That’s the blessing and curse of doing what you love for a living – we use everything around us all the time for inspiration, but we also never quite get a break from it (which usually don’t mind). We’re so lucky, and we talk about it every day, really. We love our “worklife.”

Who are some artists you admire?
The big ones are Charles and Ray Eames. To us, they really epitomize the wonderfully happy “worklife”. Others are Charles Schultz, American designer Paul Rand, German designer Otl Aicher, and Charley Harper. Shay’s are Paul Klee, Donna Wilson, her Mom, Caroline (a painter), and of course, Charley Harper.

What cities do you like to visit for their art & design culture?
Oh man do we love London. London’s jumble of cultures and people and food and shops is addicting. London has all kinds of little pockets of neighborhoods to discover, and a really interesting mix of brand new modern buildings next to others that are hundreds of years old. We also love New York. It always gets me is how wonderfully schizophrenic and dense the city is. A world-class museum is two doors down from a dry cleaner is across the street from a five-star restaurant is next to a thrift store. You can visit New York a hundred times, live there even, and never stop being surprised.

What do you think Bee Things will be creating or designing in 5 years?
We would love to design home products. We’re always getting ideas for knife racks, cutting boards, clocks, chairs, scarves, hats, mugs, etc. But the initial cost of producing and warehousing products is steep compared to creating a storing limited edition prints and paper goods. So, if there are any angel investors out there reading this, give us a call!

Blue Moth (on yellow) by Bee Things on Zatista

What is your advice to people who are not sure how to incorporate colorful artwork into their homes?
We loooooooove color! We have it all over our home. I think an easy guideline for someone who doesn’t have a lot of bright color in their home is to “double pop.” If you have a room that you are thinking of putting a bright yellow butterfly print in (wink wink!) it helps to have another object in the room, like a vase or single chair, of the same color. We also say that you can’t have too much bright and optimistic color.

What’s hanging on the walls at your house?
We have a our own prints and original artwork and prints by other folks we love and admire. To name a few of the larger pieces, we have a vintage Swiss rowing competition poster, a few original Charley Harper prints, two prints from my design mentor, Jack Summerford, Golden Gate National Park posters by Michael Schwab, posters from some of our favorite designers (Paul Rand, Ivan Chermayeff, Milton Glaser), and a 1972 Munich Olympics poster by designer Otl Aicher. We have a lot of smaller, beautiful pieces that Shay has collected over the years, way too many to list here. They’re all meaningful additions to our happy home!

Mark your calendars for late summer of 2014 – Christo‘s next project has been approved!
Currently waiting further permitting, construction is expected to begin in 2012 and will culminate in a two week showing in 2014.
As evidenced by the universal symbol of hands in prayer, the debt crisis looms in Greece. But in downtown Athens there are signs that the struggles have given birth to an artistic awakening, a recent New York Times article reports.

A work by the Greek street artist Hope is on view at the Kunsthalle Athena as part of an exhibition titled “Summer in the Middle of Winter.” photo: Eirini Vourloumis for The New York Times

“The debt crisis here has created an intriguing bright spot: a burst of artistic activity in response to the national identity crisis it has provoked,” says Rachel Donadio of the NY Times.

If you haven’t already heard, Zatista artist Alex Schaefer, painting teacher at world renowned Art Center College of Design, had a little run-in with the law again last month. Stirred by reading on the Internet that September 17 was to be a Day of Rage on Wall Street, Alex wanted to go out and make a painting.

Breakfast at Tommy's Burgers by Alex Schaefer on Zatista.com

In true artist fashion, and true to his emphasis on working from the live model, Alex camped out with easel and canvas across the street from the Los Angeles branch of The Federal Reserve to create a painterly image with a message (read Federal Reserve Bank in flames).

art by Alex Schaefer

Did I mention this is not Alex’s first painting of a bank in flames? He’s been known to paint images of symbolism on fire. Given this knowledge, guess who showed up while Alex was painting? Yes, Homeland Security. It’s happened before.

Bourbon Street, Plein Air by Alex Schaefer on Zatista.com

Indeed sacrifices are made in the name of art, but at least artist’s life is not boring. For more info about Alex’s work and links to other media including The Alex Schaefer Hour and an interview on Dan Rather Reports, click here. For a front row seat to Alex’s plein air painting of the LA Federal Reserve Branch, and his visit by the cops, see his video below:
