Happy Birthday, Duke!

The Duke Kahanamoku Hawaii Surfing Legend by Michael Verlangieri $211

I realized while searching Google yesterday that it was Duke Kahanamoku’s birthday. Who is that, you ask? According to Wikipedia, Duke Paoa Kahinu Mokoe Hulikohola Kahanamoku (August 24, 1890 – January 22, 1968) was an American competition swimmer of ethnic Hawaiian background, who is widely credited with spreading the sport of surfing. He was a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming. He was also an actor, lawman, early beach volleyball player, and businessman. [And evidentially, he had a very long name.]

In the spirit of summer and the beach, I think it’s worth collectively celebrating Duke’s birthday, both by hitting the beach and enjoying some visuals. Below are several images relating to Hawaii and surfing or both, which puts a big smile on my face.

Surfin’ Hawaiian Style by Anthony dunphy $450

Hawaii Sunset from Kaanapali, Maui by Liz Wade $195
