Art 101
So what is a "Medium" anyway?
While medium can also mean the base, or "ground" (such as canvas) on which a substance like paint is applied, the most common use of medium and one that we will use, refers simply to the substance that is applied to a surface. You may also hear the word "media" used as well. This is just the plural use of the term.
To get help get a handle on some of the more traditional mediums, we have broken them down into two general categories for each type of artwork. These general categories do not fully describe all works of art, but they provide a basic structure.
1. "Substance" Medium: The substance, such as paint, ink, or watercolor that is applied to a surface
2. "Support" Medium: The surface material to which a particular substance is applied to such as canvas, paper, wood, cloth, etc.
